University Medicine Essen, Germany

The Department of Pediatric Neurology at the University Medical Center Essen deals with the diagnosis, therapy and research of the etiology of neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases in children and adolescents. The pre-clinical research activities are leaded by PD Dr. rer. nat. Andreas Roos (Adjunct Professor University of Ottawa). The focus here is on the application of protein analysis – especially clinical proteomics – to identify and define pathophysiological cascades as well as (minimally invasive) biomarkers. For this purpose, various biomaterials such as muscle and nerve biopsies but also cultured fibroblasts and blood samples are used. Ideally, the research data collected should be used to define new (uniform) starting points for intervention concepts and to be able to monitor them through the analysis of the respective biomarkers.
