Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is a leading research university in Europe. Since its founding in 1472 it has been committed to the highest international standards of excellence in research and teaching.
The Institute of Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine is part of the Medical Faculty of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich. In addition to research in the field of medical ethics and history, the Institute’s central activities include training of students at the Medical Faculty in ethics, history and theory of medicine. It also offers training for healthcare professionals, advice to scientific and non-scientific bodies and statements for the press.
The Institute of Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine aspires to promote the historical understanding of medical practice, to reflect upon the conceptual foundations of medicine and to answer ethical questions arising in the context of health and illness. We accomplish these tasks as an interdisciplinary team, employing a broad spectrum of methodological approaches and taking into account social implications of medicine in its historical dimensions.
